Weathering the Pain

A perfect storm is howling
In the ocean’s upraised fists
Bellowing forth her furies
Spewing drenching mists
Clouds surround in crowds
Concealing the desperate fight
Of a tiny ship in tempest,
A pitiful, puny sight
And my little fingers cling
To the groaning, creaking mast
As we’re tossed about by waves
I fight to keep my grasp
The rain shows no discretion
In pelting my burning skin
And the sea, she shows no quarter
To the broken vessel that I am
My ears are full and ringing
My strength feels almost gone,
But I trust I must keep singing,
Keep on keeping on

To the sudden break of dawn.

Ithaca

Dark waters lapping at my hull,
And I have no control
Over the depths beneath
Over the sea beasts
That lurk in my dreams
And I creak at the seams
My timber shivers
Against the weight that delivers
This vessel homeward.

I’m using temporary measures,
Carnal pleasures
Tourniquets of vice
To numb these nights
But I’m waiting for the God of the sea
To arrive in storm, to rescue me
I’m tethered to this ship,
But there is One whose grip
Directs this helm heavenward.

Water and wind
Slashing again
At my weathered face,
But this journey of grace
Has an inevitable harbor
Let the wind blow harder,
Let the breakers break me
They cannot shake me

From my course.

The Ruby Portal

Red Sky at Morning
And you were born in the churning storm
Following the warning.

Violence in the wind,
You board up your windows,
In limbo again

While the tempest rages-
Your most-valuables
Barricaded in cages.

Red Sky at Morning
Blink away your warnings.

Red Sky at Mourning
These are your days of turning,
Unfurl your sails, still forming

Warm yourself in the light of day,
Put your face into the tide
Get your strides underway

These howling winds will pass
You are seaworthy, and your hull
Will remain intact

Red Skies never last,
The sun’s fury sets

This too shall pass.
